I’d like to know your thoughts on this one…
How long do you keep songs on your regular list of songs for worship in your church? Are there some songs that NEVER get taken off that list?
I know there are some songs on my list that I intentionally skip each time I go through and “clean up” my list. A few of those include songs like Israel Houghton’s “You Are Good”, Chris Tomlin’s “How Great is Our God”, and Donnie McClurkin’s “I Call You Faithful.” They just seem to be timeless to me.
What are some of the songs that have been on you list the longest? Why are they still there?
Lets talk!
Thanks Brock. I appreciate your input!
Those three songs are constantly in our rotation as well as Israel’s “Friend of God” and “I Am” by Eddie James. Trent’s “Wonderful Savior” has remained there as well as B.J. Putnam’s “Our Father”.
There are some songs that i would like to retire, but they really minister to our congregation. We still sing “Friend of God” for that reason. As a worship leader, I believe that in that role I am serving our congregation, so I do what songs minister to them. Also, we really listen to the Holy Spirit. Sometimes, you pull out an oldie and the room seems to fall flat. That tells me it’s time to throw! Really looking forward to more comments.
Thanks Erika! Great thoughts!
I think for me it depends on what is still connecting with the congregation and the season we’re in. I like to archive most. Sometimes you can pull and old song out of the archives that will just fit so perfect with the direction and season, that will rip the heavens open.
Some songs have the shelf life of produce, while, like you said, some are like twinkies….you can pull them out 50 years after a nuclear fallout and the still seem to hit the spot.
Thanks for the response man! Great to hear your views!
