What’s the sound of your house?

September 27, 2010 by Joey Hughes Leave a Comment

As worship leaders, we are constantly faced with the decision of whether to conform to what the music industry tells us we should sound like or to strive to produce a sound which is unique to what is going on in the church, city, or region in which we serve.

How are you handling this in you church? Where are you getting the music you use in your services?

Are you doing all the latest and greatest from the contemporary charts? Are you using only the songs written by you or your team members? Or are you doing both?

How are you allowing the culture, demographics, or diversity of ages or racial groups to define what the “sound” of your house is?

Do you even believe their is a sound that is specific to the house you are called to serve in?

I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Let’s talk!!!

Really? You lost Jesus???

September 24, 2010 by Joey Hughes Leave a Comment

This week, I’ve been privileged to be a part of an event called The Gathering of Eagles, here in Oklahoma City. This is a time where my Pastors, Bishop Tony and Pastor Kathy Miller bring christian leaders from all over the world in to their home for a time of fellowship, prayer, worship, and spiritual rejuvenation.

In one of our times together, Bishop Tony shared from Luke chapter two. This is the story of when Jesus was a child and his parents took him back to Jerusalem for the celebration of the Passover.

Verse 44 of this chapter says “and assuming he was with them, they traveled a days journey…” This statement should bring us all to a point of seriousĀ  self evaluation.

How many times have we as worship leaders stood on stage… “assuming that He was with us?”

How many “set lists” have we put together… “assuming that He was with us?”

I’ll be even so bold as to ask this one: How many songs have we written… “assuming that He was with us?”

Father, please help me today to stay so close you that I never have to make an assumption about whether or not you are with me. Don’t let me waste time having to “go back” to the place where I lost sight of your presence. Don’t let me mistake “relatives and acquaintances”(things that resemble former glory or past experiences) for the real power of your presence on my life. I want to be like Moses, in Exodus 33 verse 15, when he said “if your presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.”

“I don’t want to talk about you like you’re not in the room. I want to look right at you. I want to sing right to you!”

What’s the lifespan of a worship song???

September 24, 2010 by Joey Hughes Leave a Comment

I’d like to know your thoughts on this one…

How long do you keep songs on your regular list of songs for worship in your church? Are there some songs that NEVER get taken off that list?

I know there are some songs on my list that I intentionally skip each time I go through and “clean up” my list. A few of those include songs like Israel Houghton’s “You Are Good”, Chris Tomlin’s “How Great is Our God”, and Donnie McClurkin’s “I Call You Faithful.” They just seem to be timeless to me.

What are some of the songs that have been on you list the longest? Why are they still there?

Lets talk!
